Meddling around with traditional media. I inked this just for the sake of doing something different.

Epi in a dress--pretty self explanatory. I wanted to draw Epi and I wanted to draw a dress, so this is the end result. As always, I'm never pleased with my traditional endeavors, but I'm working towards feeling better about that this summer.

I absolutely adore the end result in this image, it's very flowing and elegant, and the colour scheme is quite beautiful. I like the way you used a blue that almost matches her tail scale colour for the dress; it makes the colours match much better then it would have if you had picked, say a yellow, or forest green dress. But you always have been really good at picking colours anyways.

What I did notice though was her face. It's a lot harder to draw faces traditionally, without editing anything in photoshop because sometimes it's difficult to get the eye positions looking natural. That's the problem with her face too, the eye on our right is too close to her nose, for the angle that her face is at; in doing so it looks too close to the other eye. The only thing I can really recommend for fixing problems like that is before you ink, just go over your image a few times, tweaking things and making sure they're good all over.

Besides that, I think her face is fantastic. The only other thing that bothers me a bit are the folds in her dress, some of them, mostly in the blue part, look like they shouldn't be there. So maybe tone those down a bit next time, really evaluate where cloth would fold so it doesn't look like there are random bumps anywhere.

But really, neither of those things take away from the image as a whole. It looks really great. It's always nice to see your traditional stuff pop up!

Here's my second try at this:

Technique:/Proportion It’s good to see you branching into traditional again. Your style is very evident, even in a slightly different medium. The rock and water while both fluid are distinct, making for a well balanced image. The folds in the clothing and the curves in the hair appear very natural. And over all the line work is thin, while giving firm boundaries, not looking to cartoonish or animeish. Epi’s body is in classical proportions and nothing is amiss. Nothing is over exaggerated, and while her left hand is slightly off, it’s of no consequence in the greater picture.

Color/Shading: As always your color scheme is very well balanced, the hair and tail play off of each other quite well. The rocks look natural, the shading gives them a smooth surface and texture I’d hazard a guess they’re basalt. The water is smooth and reflective, giving a calming substrate. Epi’s body is shaded very well, and while light, it’s done well enough where you can clearly tell the light source. The dress has a combination of subtle and dramatic shades, which work well with the colors chosen.

Design /Composition: The image is overall well thought out, and the background is very well orchestrated. My only issue with the composition is the placement of Epi. Her upper body is placed just right; but below the waist there are a few aesthetic issues. I only caught this because it’s a major flaw in my works. It’s not a tremendous issue here, but worth mentioning; her tail and dress are being eaten by the left margin. And while this may have been stylistic, her tail fin is only about 75% visible, which leads the eye from her hair straight off of the paper. My suggestion would be to make the curve in her tail more severe, but that may take away from the calm atmosphere.

Overall it’s another piece well done.

I don't like floppy, twisty fins, but you're growing and developing as an artist. It's a difficult subject, and you've done it well. I wish she was happier, but maybe the dress feels clammy.
:iconepiaruna:
Hm, floppy, twisty fins? Her tailfin design is basically a modified forked fin with tapering bits to it--they curve up like that naturally. I've done this before in her previous images as well as with Relana's mermaid design.

Well, when I've made my characters "happier", they tend to look goofy and ridiculous. Any insight as to how I make them less goofy?

I thank you, though.

I love the colors of blue and the outfit she's wearing. (Men like me don't say "dress" *feels manly*

I can't do squat with traditional utensils.

Merfolk seem to becoming more and more civilized. Before it seemed as if the girls wore underwear, now they got full clothes. Pants may never meet Epi but a dress should work!

Very liquidy rock looking texture. Must have came from volcanic ooze a while back.

I think the only thing that might have been nice is a bit more contrast between the dress and water. The dress also could look a little more soggy, she did come from the water after all. But those are just nit-picks!

Lawl I'm not manly, but was that ever in question for me? XD

Well thank you!
...Oh mai. I was not aware of the dress rule!
:iconepiaruna:
Well, you can at least experiment! It's all I can do with traditional media, since I'm so familiar with digital.

Well, I've never really drawn Epi in a dress frequently because...well, I dunno. Cause I didn't feel like it, I dun guess.

I'm guessing that's where my rocks came from, yeah.

I actually envisioned her to have been sitting there for a while, as her hair's dried and all. But I probably need to work on texture more! Thanks muchly!
:icondeathinator:
Yeaaah my art classes should force that on me XD

Clothes are frustrating, that's why I draw more nudes. A bra is almost nude XD

Of course! That's where I'd think anyway. Volcanos make rocks all the time.

At least there isn't a seagull there telling her about snarflats...
